A few words from the founder...
My name is Kathy White. I am the organiser for the Lights On The Hill. My husband Garry has been driving trucks for
31 years. Along the way we have lost many truck driver friends. I have thought of them often and decided that Queensland
needed a memorial. We talked to a lot of drivers and they all agreed with me. I approached the Gatton Shire Council about
having a memorial in Gatton as we have such a large amount of trucks move in the area. The council are very supportive and
told me we could erect the memorial at Lake Apex Park. It is planned to plant an avenue of trees, each tree representing a driver
who died in a truck accident.
About the memorial
“Lights On The Hill” is a Queensland founded organization started by Kathy White to
remember the names those in the trucking industry that have lost their lives over the
past years. This remembrance will take shape in the form of a memorial wall to be located
at Lake Apex in Gatton, Australia.
The name originated from the famous Slim Dusty trucking song “Lights On The Hill”.
Before the late Slim Dusty passed away, he and his wife Joy agreed to use the name
“Lights On The Hill” and to be patrons of the memorial, along with John “The Ferret”
Moran. The wall will have a main section for drivers who have lost their lives while
working, a section for drivers who have died by other means, and also a section for sponsors
who have assisted in the wall’s completion.
Sketch of the wall

Dimensions
The wall will be 3600mm high, 6100mm wide
The simplistic shape
The shape represents the front view of a truck seen from a distance ~ grill, rounded guards, lights and cabin.
The choice of materials are:-
Helidon Sandstone
As a local material the sandstone represents the fact that many of the people in the trucking community will be the people next door, relatives and friends. The irregular shapes demonstrate that no two are identical, yet together they all work to get the job done.
Darwin Brown Granite
Whilst this material is quarried outside Queensland, it represents the distance that many drivers travel and in doing so they bring people together. The colour of the Darwin Brown Granite is also a symbol of the rich character that is unique within the trucking community.
Bronze
The use of bronze plaques for the individual names on the memorial demonstrates the strengths and mate ship relied upon during times of adversity and hardship.
The location
The memorial is at Gatton’s Lake Apex Park on the outskirts of Gatton it is a very peaceful place for remembrance and a place family’s can come and know their children will be safe from road traffic while they remember their loved ones and friends.
Gatton Shire Council
Have given their support in many ways but more particularly by allowing the wall to be built on land at Lake Apex.
The council is helping extensively with the project, Council have made available accounting and trust account services to help process the donations and sponsor’s money, by doing this the money collected will be in safe hands.
